A Message from the Commodore
Once again the club has to
thank that small band of dedicated members who turned
up for the work weekend. These are the people who do the
jobs which keep the club running, and also save the huge
costs the club would otherwise have to payout.
If you have ever wondered why our club membership and
berthing fees are so low compared to other clubs it is
due to those members who so generously give their time
and energy so that other members may benefit.

The old slipway was dragged out and the new
slipway was put in over the Easter Holiday. This was achieved
by the team in the pouring rain, after much debate, muscle power
and a sense of humour plus a few choice expressions.
The new club launch to replace "Calypzoe Rose" has
finally arrived and we are just waiting for its river license
and insurance to be sorted out so that it can be used. It is
a "Cap 360" which it is claimed to be unsinkable which
a valuable safety feature Still they said that about the Titanic.
It should hold six people and has an outboard motor. This will
make it more reliable than Calypzoe Rose as we can always swap
one engine for another if there is a problem. This week it under
went its trail run and was found to be very stable and ideal
for club use. You can try it out with other club boats on
the 9th May when the club will have a special member's day.
From the Bosun
Sorry, but this must be a moaning session.
Do come and look after you boat. The condition of some members
trailers are a disgrace and their boats are incapable of being
moved let alone being launched. Please do some thing about it
if you are guilty. Space is at a premium. If your boat is just
being dumped on the club you may well be asked to remove it.
Just a reminder, please help to keep the club house tidy, do
not leave your gear etc in the club room, use the changing rooms,
the bosun's shed or the "dog kennel".
If you still have boating equipment in the "dog kennel"
or the petrol store please mark it with your name. There are
all manner of paddles, oars, rudders, petrol cans etc. owners
unidentified. When we have club work weekends and junk removed
to the dump, it is possible for some workers to regard much
of this as "rubbish" or abandoned, especially when
the equipment is old and may have been un-used for some time.
Members can not regard the club as a place to dump their equipment.
Boating equipment is expensive so please help in marking your
property and taking it home if you are not going to use it for
a long period.
Recently a member reported a missing kayak from the rack. As
canoes and kayaks are vulnerable please make sure your boat
is properly secured and you have left a spare key with your
name with it in the key box.

From the Membership Secretary
If you haven't yet paid your membership or bething fees, due
on the 1st April please do so quickly. Sent your renewal form
and your cheque made payable to the BMYC to the address on the
form. Do not leave cheques at the club as this causes confusion
and they can get lost.

Members Day - Sunday 9th May
This will be an opportunity to get a float. All the club
boats will be available for members to try out. We have a Laser,
a Solo a double rowing boat and of course the new rescue boat.
If you haven't used the winch the Bosun and other members will
be there to show you how to use it safely. There will be sailing
in the morning for members to join in with if they wish and
various canoes and other boats to try out during the day. In
the afternoon there will be a couple of the infamous light hearted
"Sea Gull" races. With Reg Scott the only person who
understands the rules for this event cheating may be expected.
Light refreshments will be available or you can picnic on the
lawn. Come along and get the summer boating season off with
a bang, but don't forget a change of clothes.
Row Your Boat - Saturday 1st May
If you find launching and recovery of your boat difficult or
you row on your own and would like company then why not make
a note of this? It is proposed that on the first Saturday morning
of each month the club has a rowing outing with either a picnic
or pub lunch. The new club rescue boat will of course be in
attendance for giving a tow if required. You don't even need
to have a boat; you could use the club boat or even a club member's
boat if given enough notice. Canoeists are also welcome to join
in. The first outing will be on Saturday 1st May leaving about
11:30am, the destination will be subject to river conditions
and weather.
